Location
On disembarking from the ferry terminal in Tarbert, Isle of Harris, you have to turn left following the one way system – keep following the one way system as it bears right.
When you come to the end of the one way system (with the Halifax Bank of Scotland on your right) you go straight ahead (past A D Munro Grocer and Butcher on your left and the post office on your right).
Stay on this road for approximately 7 miles and you will reach Scalpay Bridge. Go across the bridge, ignoring the first turning to your left, and you will come to a junction. Turn left. Follow this winding road past the Bistro/Cafe on your right, past the play park on your left – here the road bears left – keep on this road for approximately 1 mile.
Cartwheel Bothy is on your left just before you start to climb a small hill with a bus shelter at the top. If you go past the cottage there is a fork in the road to your right and you can turn around here and so the cottage is now first on your right with a gravelled parking area in front.
Alternatively, if you are travelling from Stornoway, on reaching Tarbert turn left toward the village centre, then immediate left again onto the one way system following the signs for Scalpay as above.
If you are travelling without a car transport can be arranged from Tarbert (with prior notice).
A bus service operates between Scalpay and Tarbert six days a week until early evening.
