Cartwheel Bothy
I (Lorna) my husband Jezz and Stitch the dog look forward to welcoming you to Cartwheel Bothy.
Cartwheel Bothy's first conversion was many years ago and served a dual purpose as the Ministers office and as the old Scalpay fire brigade HQ! We completed renovating in November 2011 and it's been a labour of love converting this into a holiday cottage. It's now cosy but at the same time functional, with modern appliances, stylish and clean – it would make a romantic honeymooners venue or just a retreat for those wanting to 'get away from it all'. It would also make a great base for anglers, walkers and birdwatchers.
The scenery is stunning around the cottage and we have taken full advantage of this with French doors from the lounge area giving uninterrupted views to the bay. The same view can be enjoyed from the large bedroom window. On an evening the sunsets can be awesome, with skies blood red and orange. And after the sun has set the stars are spectacular on a clear night with the milky way and constellations clearly visible and shooting stars can often be observed. We have even watched the aurora on several occasions.
Some of the highlights Cartwheel Bothy offers
- Beautifully situated overlooking a bay – a short walk across a field to the shoreline
- Stream running alongside the cottage with seating
- You can watch the ferry on its way into Tarbert as it appears then disappears behind one of the small islands then reappears again
- Watch the otters and seals from the comfort and warmth of an armchair or if it's sunny from the seating area outside
Insider Information
Jezz worked for Scottish Natural Heritage and his job sent him to locations hidden from the usual tourist routes, so he can be a wealth of knowledge for those who want to explore those out of the way places, whether it be on the Isle of Scalpay, Harris or Lewis.
